In the area of Hajdú-Bihar County there are not great differences in the features of terrain but regarding the climate considerable differences can be experienced. The climate of the county is drier in summer and colder in winter in comparison to the climate of the Great Hungarian plain called Alföld in general.
The area of Hajdúság situated in the middle part of the county occupies an intermediate position in every respect between Nyírség and the Middle Area of River Tisza as well as Hortobágy. Its area join the various characteristic climate features of the neighbouring regions.
The number of average sunny hours covers 2020 and 2150 hours in the county every year; the mean yearly temperature is about 10,5-11,0 °C. In Hortobágy the average temperature in July is often over 22 °C . Winter usually brings rigorous frosts and the coldest month is January. Because of cold winter spring comes later in general the last frost is at the end of April.
As to precipitation, Hajdú-Bihar County is one of the driest areas of Alföld. June is the rainiest month and January is the driest month. The yearly amount of precipitation does not usually provide the sufficient amount for a safe agricultural production.
