In the area of Hajdúság, a number of museums, typical local village houses and collections of local history can be found representing the past of our county. In addition to them, collections of fine arts, creative art camps for artists and galleries enrich the cultural life of the area. Various museums and galleries are interesting and attractive places for art experts and amateurs as well.
Almost every town has a museum but the richest range of museums is offered in Debrecen where a museum district is developing in the city centre.
In addition to the rich archeological, local historic, fine arts, cultural, ethnographic collections of towns and the region itself, these museums also exhibit historic relics, collections of national and international reputation, permanent and periodic exhibitions for connoisseurs and for the public for educational purposes. A number of visitors must have heard of the monumental paintings of Christ painted by Mihály Munkácsy. These paintings are priceless treasures of the Hungarian nation. Two of the paintings can be seen in Déri Museum and the third painting called Christ before Pilate can be seen in Canada at the moment, hopefully that is not its final destination.
A number of establishments that are primarily not involved in exhibiting or arranging exhibition have an exhibiting room. Among others Debrecen University, the Municipal Library, the cultural centre and Kölcsey Centre that is considered to be one of the most stately cultural establishments in our region.

In Debrecen visitors can always find a cultural event that is considered rarity both in our country and on international level. Among others the public could see the best press photos of every year or the life exhibition of Márton Szipál born in Debrecen, the photographer of Hollywood stars. A genuine “polymath” “moved” to Debrecen when the second largest gallery in our country called Modem opened the exhibition ‘The real da Vinci’ that over 160 thousand people visited. And the story is going on…

Shepherds’ culture is still a living tradition in Hortobágy. The stressed issue of the exhibiting places in Hortobágy is to show that living tradition. Visitors can learn about the everyday life and way of life of shepherds not only in museums but they can also experience that atmosphere attending a traditional shepherds’ meeting or competition.
The region of Hajdúság was named after the Haiduk people who were privileged foot-soldiers in the army of István Bocskai in war of liberation in the 17th century. These soldiers were settled by Bocskai in Hajdúböszörmény known as the central place of Hajdúság. The Hajdúság Museum in Hajdúböszörmény displays the history and ethnography of Hajdúság.
There are several private galleries that display and sell the works of art made by artists among others renowned artists lived or still living in Debrecen such as László Holló, István Burai and Ákos László.
