The first museum in Balmazújváros was founded in 1911. It was located in the ground-floor rooms of the newly built and somewhat oversized town hall. A local teacher, headmaster and polymath Antal Varga Sr., compiled the first exhibition from approximately 2300 objects including his own antiquities, documents from the town's archives and ethnographic and historical relics collected from pupils and their parents. The collection was completely destroyed in the World Wars. It was not until the 1960s that on the initiative of József Harangi, an enthusiastic local patriot, an exhibition room was opened on the premises of the local cultural centre. The predecessor of the present museum was a collection of local history opened in a former school (earlier a Catholic one) on the initiative of Imre Dankó, retired director of the county's museums. It has been functioning as a member institution of the Directorate of Museums in Hajdú-Bihar County. The over 100-year-old building that hosts the museum was built by the local landowner Andor Semsey, a great patron of Hungarian culture and science.
