In the last years Debrecen has been awarded worthily with the epithet “capital of sport” because the town has hosted a number of sports events since 2001. Several sport investments projects accomplished in our town prove the intention of our town to promote the local sports life and play an active role in the international sports life. Due to these development projects the athletics stadium was build that is also operated as an official training centre. In addition, Főnix Hall, the inside ice rink and the competition swimming pool were also built. Under the active participation of the local government and cooperation of the town a new momentum was given to the local sports clubs and sports associations among others the local football team as well as the men’s and women’s handball team

Debrecen Sports Centre Services PSC has a central part in the sports life in Debrecen. The association established in 2000 manages the sports centre in Oláh Gábor utca, Nagyerdő Stadium and Hódos Imre Sports Hall as the public service corporation owned by the town of Debrecen. The Sports Centre was established with the purpose tha managing these sports facilities the town itself takes a more active role in the regional or national sports life. Its facilities provide preparation and competition possibilities of high level for several first-class teams Due to the arranging of national and international tournaments the public service corporation met with several professional acknowledgement. Among others 1. IAAF Steet Running World Championship, I. Men and Women Gymnastics European Championship, 6. Women Handball European Championship, Gymnastics World Championship and Short Track Swimming European Championship organized by the Sports Centre were held
The facilities of the Sports Centre certainly welcome the public that loves mass sports and exercises. In addition, several sports and leisure centres, sports clubs and gyms welcome people longing for sports under conditions of high standard and in pleasant atmosphere in Debrecen.
