Fancsikai tavakHajdúság is situated in the area of hundreds of square kilometres in the Northern part of the Hungarian Lowland called Alföld. Due to its diversity the area is particularly varied; it is unforgettable scenery.

Considering the local geographical conditions, Debrecen lies in the meeting point of three geographical small regions. For a landscape geographical consideration, the city is “officially” classified to the southern part of Nyírség but it borders the areas of Hajdúhát and the southern part of Hajdúság. For this reason the natural conditions of these small regions mixed here. In the East it borders with Nyírség, in the West with the plains of Hortobágy and in the South with the region of the river Körös.

galagonyaIn Hajdúság several nature conservation areas and areas of local importance can be found. The immense plain area of Hortobágy is an integral part of it and it became the typical wavy scenery of Hajdúság. Later a special living area with a character of its own developed on these waves or sand-hills and in the “valleys” between the hills. Once immense woodlands endangered by the river Tisza covered this area.

Though Hortobágy has not administratively belonged to Debrecen since 1946, this huge plain land constitutes the immediate surroundings of Debrecen. Moreover, it had had an important part in the economic life or the town for long centuries. Even today it is connected to the town through several connections.

Two important events of the history of the Hungarian nature conservation are also linked to Debrecen and Hortobágy. The Great Wood district in Debrecen became the first nature reserve in our country in 1939 and the plains of Hortobágy was declared the first national park in our country in 1973.

ErdőspusztaIn the eastern-southeastern part of Debrecen, the landscape varied with forests, meadows and fields and called Wooded Plains was formed several centuries ago. This area developed in the surrounding landscape that became deserted in the stormy periods of the Hungarian history. A trip or excursion in the Wooded Plains around Debrecen provide an excellent opportunity for relaxation and rest as well as for learning about the typical flora and fauna of the landscape.

Once the lands of Debrecen covered among others Tiszadob along the Tisza River and the Wood in Gút. A 70 km area from this estate served the purposes of animals husbandry. We can state that the cattle of the “Civic” citizens from Debrecen would graze in Hortobágy and they would stay in winter time in the Wooded Plains around Debrecen.
