Debrecen have several spots for families. The popular excursion spots such as Nagyerdő, the Wooded Plains or Hortobágy offer numerous programmes to all age-groups.
A number of spots and establishments preferred by families can be found in Nagyerdő. Among others Aquaticum Spa, Nagyerdő open-air-bath, the Zoological and Botanical Gardens of Nagyerdő Culture Park, the Amusement Park, the Rowing Pond, the ice-rink in winter as well as two most favourite play-grounds called Five Acre Woodland and Millennium play-ground.
Főnix Hall hosts several children programmes. In its vicinity the new town sports swimming-pool is situated.
In the city centre the biggest puppet theatre of the region Vojtina Puppet Theatre and the so called Tanner’s House that hosts handicraft activities offer interesting programmes. The Central Community Centre in Kossuth street arranges several programmes for families. In the “quarter of museums” MODEM Modern and Contemporary Arts Centre situated near Déri Museum offers programmes of museum pedagogy to children at the weekends.
If you want to go to the countryside at the weekend, go on a trip to the “Erdőspuszták” (Wooded Plains), take the so called Zsuzsi train or visit any of the excursion spots in Erdőspuszta such as Hármashegy or Lake Vekeri. Near Lake Vekeri a recreation area called Víg-kend Major offers facilities for cooking in the open air, exhibiting pets and a wide range of sports grounds. All these programmes provide a pleasant stay there.
Apart from Nagyerdő open-air bath, you can go to other baths such as the open-air bath in Kerekes-telep or in Látókép.
Hortobágy is also a source of everlasting experiences for visitors with family. The old and young of the family will enjoy themselves if they visit the Puszta Zoo, the Handicraft Court or take the narrow-gauge train along Halas-tavak (Fish Ponds), visit the Bird Park or go on a puszta trip by carriage or go with an expert to see the crane migration in autumn. Finally you must not miss to try to find the unique phenomenon called Fata Morgana, this illusion that can be seen in the immense plain of Hortobágy.
