The boxthorn grows countrywide: it is neither grass nor tree. However the boxthorn grown into a tree is a botanical rarity. According to the local unwritten tradition the apostle of the Reformation Pastor Bálint had a quarrel with the Catholic priest Ambrosias. In the heat of the debate the Catholic priest broke off a branch of the boxthorn and with a good laugh stuck it into the ground saying: “This religion will only come to something when this grows into a tree!” And it really did become a tree, moreover the Reformed religion flourished for the most part in Debrecen. However this boxthorn tree is only app. 250 years old and the religious disputes took place 450 years ago.
