It is also called the Cemetery of Heroes, since the first deceased buried here were the heroes who died in the battle of Debrecen on 2nd August 1849. On 4th August the first common grave held the soldiers who died in battle, since then it has been called Soldier Cemetery. Until the end of 1917 the war dead of the First World War were buried here.
